Paid Surveys, Paid to Click and Web Opportunities - Advice for Hopeful Online Moneymakers

It was undeniable, I needed to make some extra money. After considering all the options, the obvious place to do it was the internet. This seemed like the smartest choice for a stay at home mom with limited time.

After all, making money online meant that I would not be wasting time and money driving to and from work, I would not need to find a babysitter, and best of all, I would not need to invest much to begin.

So it began. Every spare minute I had was on the internet trying out money making ideas: paid surveys, paid to click sites, and websites that claimed to make you rich. Here is what I discovered:

Paid Surveys:

You can make some money if you join many of them. You do NOT need to pay a site that lists paid survey sites to find these places but if you are not able to search them out yourself you might find it worth it. I signed up with about ten sites and in two months have made about $80.00. The paid survey site I made the most money with is Web Perspectives. They send many survey requests and I also participated in a focus group.

My advice: Open a paypal account to make it easier to get payments from the survey sites you join. Make sure the site is valid for the country your in. Check whether they pay you in points or cash.

Paid to Click:

I was not impressed with these sites. To earn anything at all, you need to click day and night unless you have earned referral levels. They are often confusing and indirect about exactly how much you need in terms of cash or points in order to get paid. I found that the option for payout is almost impossible to find on some that I tried. This kind of opportunity is time consuming and for the little you get back, not worth the effort.

Advice: Be wary of the sites that tell you each mail is worth $100.00 or more. The payout point is high too and good luck with finding where to redeem your cash!

Money Making Websites:

There is no get rich quick scheme that is real. Remember that when you look at the websites that tell you that you'll be making thousands a day starting tomorrow. Research any site before you pay. Search for scam warnings and check what people who have tried it say before laying down your cash. What you find out will open your eyes before you open your wallet. The one business I wanted to join was The Berry Tree. You do make money if you stay in and it's not a get rich quick scheme. It requires an investment of $55.00 per month. For your money you get support, advertising, products and guaranteed growth. The best part is you don't have to do anything but stay in and you'll still move up to higher and higher levels of pay. I could not find anything that scared me off when I researched it.

Advice:

Research before you join any website that claims you'll make money. Join only if you know you are investing in something that is guaranteed to give you a return.

Working at Home: The Dream And the Reality

Everyone dreams of working at home. No sitting in traffic breathing car exhaust. Wake up and start work when ever you choose. Work in your pajamas. Do only interesting tasks that you enjoy. Take a break whenever you feel like it. Sounds too good to be true.

The reality is that the first thing many people who work at home want is to earn enough money to rent an office away from home.

Why? Because when you work at home, you are always at work. Your work hours may end at 5:00, but your computer, your desk, and all those uncompleted tasks are always there. Your home becomes the focal point of the problems and stress of work.

Your boss is not there to hover over you, but guess what? You now have an even more stern taskmaster lording over your every moment - yourself. To be successful working at home you have to have self discipline, make your own schedule, and stay focused.

Although you can dress loose and casual, you probably don't want to work in your pajamas. In fact, a morning ritual where you "get dressed for work" may be just what you need to motivate yourself to begin work.

Have your own business? Every business has some tasks that are challenging and interesting, and some that are boring and tedious. If you work at home alone in your own business, guess who has to do the boring and tedious tasks.

Are you a telecommuter? When you work at the company's office, everyone can see and understand why you where unable to accomplish much. It's the result of normal organizational disorganization and disruption. But when you work at home, your boss and coworkers think everything goes smoothly. If you don't complete tasks on time, it's not because you had to work through complications and problems, it's because you spent the day watching soap operas on TV.

Although you may attend some of the meetings at work, everyone knows the real organizational communications happens at water cooler gossip sessions. And guess who's getting blamed for all the departments screw-ups and for the work being behind schedule. The person who's not there to defend themself.

It's not only your boss and coworkers that think you're not working, but your family and friends too. If you are at home, you are not really working, so you have plenty of time to do chores, run errands, babysit, and chat with visitors.

Although you might have some flexibility in work hours, you will find that maintaining a regular schedule and routine is very important for your productivity. It provides predictability to your friends and family so they understand when you can be approached and when you may not be interrupted.

Everyone dreams of working at home, but a large percentage of those who try don't succeed. Why do they fail? Because working at home requires a job suited for working at home, a home suited for working in, a worker with strong self discipline, and a boss who knows how to manage telecommuting employees effectively. Unfortunately, this is a rare combination.

The trend of corporate America creating work at home jobs for telecommuters is growing, which is good news for those of you who are looking to do your work in your pajamas every day. More than 4 million people currently have the good fortune of working from home. From major corporations letting their key people set up a home office to the many inspiring home based business owners. Having the ability to set your own hours is the key benefit in choosing to work from home.

Home based businesses are continuing to grow at an incredible rate. The Internet has opened a window of opportunity for business ventures that were once impossible to build in a home office environment. Working from home is not always a bed of roses. It is common for most that work from home to become workaholics. Having your work or business accessible 24 hours a day makes it hard to know when to quit for the day.

Working at Home - What Options Are Available?

If you've just begun your work-at-home search, you are likely feeling confused and overwhelmed by all the options out there. How do you know what's legitimate? How do you avoid the scams? Are there really jobs you can do from home? Yes!

So many people are happily working from home, and you can too. You just have to know where to look. This article will explain the types of work you can do at home, which basically fall into four categories:

Working for an Employer - (This is often called "telecommuting.") There are many legitimate companies that hire people to work from their home offices, and that number is growing every day. Employers are seeing the benefits of having employees work remotely, and many more will join these ranks in the future. (See our list of companies that hire telecommuters.) Some companies will hire you as an actual employee; you will fill out tax forms and the employer will take taxes out of your paycheck, just like if you worked on location. Other companies will hire you as an independent contractor. They will send you a 1099 form at the end of the year, and you are responsible for paying your own taxes. The employer may require you to work certain hours every day, or a set number of hours per week. Pay may be hourly, weekly, bi-weekly, or per piece (as with data entry type jobs). Some telephone jobs will pay you per "talk minute" - in other words, you will be paid only for the time you are actively speaking with customers.


Freelancing - A "freelancer" is someone who hires out their skills to various companies for a specific project. The skills are usually those of a professional nature, such as writing, computer programming, web design and graphic arts, secretarial/administrative and virtual assisting. Some popular freelance websites are Guru.com and eLance.com. You can browse the jobs available and bid on them. If your bid wins, you get the job. Note that these jobs are usually temporary, for one project only. However, if you build a reputation for good work and meeting deadlines, you will often get offered other jobs.


Home Business Opportunity - You can also start your own business as a representative for an existing company. Most of these companies are Direct Sales or Network Marketing/MLM (Multi-Level Marketing). You've probably heard of many such companies, like Tupperware, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Avon, and Pampered Chef. There are thousands to choose from. (See our list of home business opportunities.) There are many benefits to this type of work at home. You are your own boss, you set your own hours, and you are in complete control of how much income you earn (as opposed to earning a set amount of money each week from an employer). There are also some great tax breaks for home-based businesses.


Create Your Own Business - The final option is to build your own company. The possibilities are endless. Just about any skills you have can be turned into a home business. Dog walking/pet sitting, virtual assisting, catering, bicycle repair, childcare, crafts and artwork, etc. The most important thing to consider: is there a market for what you can do? Would people pay for the products or services you can supply? If you set your mind to it, I bet you could come up with dozens of great ideas for businesses you can do.

Avoid the Scams

The number one thing to remember about scammers is that they want either your money, or your personal information. Never, ever pay a "fee" to begin working for a company. (Business opportunities do frequently require you to purchase a start-up kit, however I am referring to actual telecommuting jobs here.) No matter how great they make a job sound, do NOT pull out your credit card and send them money. It is a scam. Rarely, some legitimate companies might charge you for training, but more often they will deduct this from your first few paychecks. If you're really not sure if a company is legitimate, ask around! Visit work at home message forums and ask about the company. Chances are people have heard of them, or can tell you whether it's a genuiune job or not. Unfortunately, new scammers pop up every day, so even if you can't find anything negative about them, proceed cautiously.

Likewise, if you are unsure whether a company is legitimate, do NOT give them your social security number, home address, or any banking information (for direct deposit). An employer will not need this information unless they are actually hiring you. I recommend people to leave those fields blank when applying for a job. If the employer likes your qualifications and wants to hire you (and you are absolutely certain they are legitimate) then you can supply that information. Real employers will understand your caution.

The best way to avoid scams is to listen to your gut. There are always warning signs. Even if everything seems on the up and up, and your gut is giving you a signal that something doesn't seem right, LISTEN to that. I can't tell you how many times I've heard people say, "I had a bad feeling but I wanted it to be for real, so I took a chance." Don't do that. You have a great built-in warning system. We all do. It's called Intuition. Use it. Outsmart the scammers.

Professionalism, Patience and Persistence

Finally, remember that work at home positions have a tremendous amount of demand. Thousands and thousands of people are applying for the very same positions that you are. Make sure your resume is in top form and clearly details your experience and qualifications for the job you are applying for. Consider investing in a professionally done resume and cover letter. It is well worth the money if it lands you the job!

If you haven't heard back after a week or two, why not follow up with the company and check on the status of your application? Send a nice email inquiring, or call them. (Only if the company hasn't requested that you not do that.) Don't whine or beg, be professional about it. Express your genuine interest in working for them. Persistence can pay off, as long as you're not annoying your potential employer.

Patience is important, as finding a work at home position can take many months. If you can't wait, why not consider starting your own business? Don't let lack of experience stop you. You can learn anything you don't know. Talk to other business owners who do what you are considering. Ask them how they got started. There are a lot of great people out there who would be willing to help guide you in the right direction.

Think about what you really want in a home based career. Do you prefer to be your own boss, or work for someone else? Do you need flexible hours, or would you rather have a set schedule? Do you like telephone work, or internet based? Make a definite list of what you do want, and what you don't want. That will make your search much quicker.

Believe in yourself. You can create the perfect career for yourself. Many others have done it, so why not you too?

Work From Home Internet Business Opportunities-Advantage And Disadvantages

People often ask me how I make money online working from home. When I tell them, the response is usually, COOL I WISH I WERE DOING THAT! But there are some minor disadvantages of having a work from home internet job.

My number 1 disadvantage of working from home on the internet is interruptions by family members while I'm trying to do something productive. Sure there are always interruptions at the office but my work from home internet business resides in my kitchen. There are ways to get around this if you have a spare room that you can use to set up shop in. I do not unfortunately.

Number 2 is just plain laziness and procrastination. As my own boss it's easy to put off work from home business in exchange for a nice quiet day in front of the TV watching the discovery channel. It's rally hard to get motivated sometimes. Especially when everyone has left the house and you are all alone.

Number 3 is finding a good balance between family time work from home business time and my full time job. Yes I still have a full time job. One of the reasons I started a work from home business is so I would have more leisure time with friends and family. But until I am making enough to quit my full time job, it does not look like that will happen.

Number 4 is security and not knowing how much money your work from home business is going to make from month to month. Also waiting for checks to show up in the mail that are a few days behind when you need to pay a bill or the mortgage can be an inconvenience. When you are working for someone else for a set amount of hours and a set hourly rate you know exactly what your income will be.

As for the advantages, well I think the advantages far out weigh the disadvantages.

My number 1 work from home advantage is the ability to work whenever I want anywhere I want. With a lap top computer I can pretty much do business anywhere
In the world. No matter were I am, on vacation or on a business trip or whatever. The internet and today's technology makes a work from home internet business my business of choice.

My number 2 work from home advantage is not having to commute to work every morning. We have all hard the phrases rat race, no commute required and work from home in your pajamas. I have actually worked in my pajamas on the internet with a hot cup of coffee. Knowing that you do not have to get up at 6:00 am to go to work in the morning is a beautiful feeling.

My number 3 work from home advantage is not having a boss to tell me what to do all the time. The only boss I have is my consciousness that tells me to get up off the couch and go write an article on my computer or look for places to submit my web site URL to.

And finally my number 4 work from home internet business advantage is the income potential. Basically the income potential for a work from home internet business is endless. It all depends on how hard you want to work and how much time you want to devote to your work from home internet business. And with the amount of people joining the internet community every year, the future is bright.

Let me begin this article by saying it is possible to complete an online survey and get paid for your opinion. It is a fact that thousands of work from home entrepreneurs are getting paid big time for completing surveys, participating in focus groups, and even to preview movie trailers!

Why would companies pay you for giving your opinion? Because they need your opinion as part of their market research to determine which products to sell and to what markets. It also helps them to improve their products to existing markets in order to improve their profit margin.

Now believe you me, the companies that pay you to complete an online survey are already making money, they just understand that doing a survey to find out what people like or dislike can make them even more profitable.

Furthermore they usually come with little or no support and guidance on how to maximize your profitability; after all you get what you pay for.

2. Online Survey Websites (fee based)

These sites charge a fee to access their compiled database of online survey companies. This is usually a one time fee of 30-35 dollars that covers access to a compiled and updated database, tips and or tutorials on how to turn your online survey venture into a profitable home business, and bonuses that are usually worth more than the access fee!

So there you have it, one mans opinion. Now you can do your own due diligence and check out which method will best benefit you most. One thing is for sure; online surveys can be a profitable home business that will provide a very nice part time or full time income. Here's to our success.

The Difficulties, Challenges and Problems Of Teleworking, Telecommuting and Working at Home

Working at home, from home, in your pajamas, in the nude, at the beach, working from bed or the easy chair - these are all the images and joys of home working that Kate and I enjoy and many others too. Kate and I sell Real Estate; that is perhaps the most popular telecommuting, work at home; pick your own hours job, in the country.

There are some difficulties that go with working at home. Perhaps half of the people who start working from home don't succeed, mostly due to lack of personal discipline or family discipline.

There are freedoms of working from home and along with freedoms go responsibilities. Those freedoms of working at home can also be challenges to responsibility which will lower your production and moral as you fail to meet deadlines and quotas.

I have been telecommuting or teleworking; since we imported the term teleworking from the Brits and it's now used by our Federal Government; and believe me I would rather work from home and my car than from a cubical. Since I entered the work force, I prefer me as my boss and get more done that way. I get to decide importances and have seldom found a boss that is not prone to wanting sillier busy-work than I'm willing to do.

One boss I had, my brother, had over 150 pieces of paper to fill out for selling a mobile home. On my own, I used two - the sales contract and the certificate of title. In the 8 hours it took me to fill out the 150 pieces of paper, I'd get "interrupted" by sales calls and showings of homes, so the paperwork of one sale took a week at times.

As a home-worker I get to determine what works and what doesn't. One boss I had, a client who bought about 50 properties from me, was convinced that I should advertise her properties for sale with no price - so I would get calls. That was, and is, stupid. I did not want calls. I wanted prospective purchasers.

One of my clients wanted me to run these blind ads, ads with no price and I wouldn't do it. So, he placed an ad in the New York Times and another in The Wall Street Journal. "Waterfront home, 3 BR, 2BA, Fireplace, Boat Dock, Scrn Prch, at the Beach -- $39,000" and put my phone number on the ad. I got several hundred phone calls and not one, that's right not one, was a prospective purchaser. Why? Because it was a trailer on a rented lot in a trailer park and it was 500 miles from New York City. His idea was to make the phone ring; an altered priority. Now, when you go to my web site you will find properties for sale that tell everything about the property and usually with a map.

You see I don't want calls that are not interested in what I have to sell at the price I need to get. As my own boss I do the ads my way and not based on somebody else's "idea" of what is right or workable. These freedoms, chief among them the freedom FROM idiocy of bosses, are precious. However, I also have to find out what works and take chances without a boss to blame the errors on.

Working at home is great, but not easy. To excel; to make it even, you must have exceptional personal discipline, organizing skills and persistence. Those who work less at home than in the office will certainly make far less working at home than working in the office. In the office you may take a thirty minute coffee break and not get caught. At home, with that sort of discipline, your coffee break may go on for hours or even days. Or you may just sleep in and not even get up to make the coffee. for hours, days or weeks. And there goes the rent or mortgage payment and there goes the house.

Working at home is freeing. There is no dress code. You can work in your pajamas, your shorts, or even work at home in the buff - naked. However, we all know that when we dress up, at least some of us act more professional. And with no bosses slipping by the cubical to check over your shoulder - what are you working on?

I will tell you this: when I did some work as a business consultant for a large consulting firm - the PRIMARY CAUSE OF BUSINESS FAILURE WAS COMPUTER GAMES. Believe it or not, almost every one of the businesses that was going under and had to hire us had one or more people playing Solitaire or some other computer game dozens of hours a month. Most of the time it was the boss, his wife, his girlfriend, or all three that were bankrupting the business with solitaire or Doom. When no one else is forcing you to produce - some people won't. Here are some reasons that those who have failed at telecommuting have failed.

Lack of Family Discipline: When you work at home you can also tend to family and that is great. I love it. However, it also allows for magnified interruptions. Child care can easily consume more than an entire day, if you don't learn to discipline your children in an effective and nurturing way. If you just yell "Be quiet I'm working." They will find a way to get your attention - no matter what - and it will often be at just the wrong time - like when Mr. Big is on the phone, or when you have procrastinated and the deadline is NOW.

If you must fix dinner for your husband, change the baby, take the other three kids to all those dozens of lessons, meet them at the bus, do the dishes, vacuum the floors, do the laundry, wax the floors, oil the antiques, sweep the driveway and talk to your several unemployed friends on the phone. then you won't likely succeed as a telecommuter.

Older kids are even more of a challenge if you are not willing to raise disciplined kids - and there are very few of those these days. If you have no kids, but have dogs, parrots, hobbies, books, TV shows, and all sorts of other interests that take you away from production - you won't make it either. How would you like to employ someone who could only work when there was nothing else taking a senior priority in attention?

Food: Snacking, gourmet cooking, coffee making, refrigerator door swinging and ice-cream eating can take a huge amount of time in a day. And, then you either must set aside twice as much time for exercise, or set aside money for the new and larger wardrobe. Many people, who work at home, could be said to be working Chip-Side. Chips, dips, sodas, candy, a few extra snacks beside the computer and soon you will need a larger, wider, more powerful chair and reinforcing slats under the mattress. The upside is that your social life will die and you'll have more time to work and pay for the food and larger clothing. Can we say Tent Clothing?

Sloth: Laziness, slow motion, procrastination and self-interruption are killers of the home worker. If one of your motivations is to sleep in, you had better be similarly motivated to work late. You will need to learn to produce, to promote yourself, do market yourself and your product and procrastination is self-destructive. Snooze and loose. One of my very productive friends sleeps until 2:30 pm every day. He calls me on his way to his first cup of coffee and I welcome him to the day with "Good morning Lee!" he chuckles but in about 7 minutes he is off the phone and planning his day over his next cup of coffee. He allows no interruptions from any phones until 5:30 pm and works every night through until about 3 am when he answers his e-mail and then goes to bed a little after 4 am. He is a home designer and his clients are builders who take care of building during the day and talk with him from their home to his, at night. He is not sloth. He just works the night shift and does it well.

There are many who work at home that work the graveyard shift and find that working when others sleep, allows them to be more productive and creative. So sleep in if you will or take off early if you will, but doing both will knock you out of business. When you work at home, you work from to-do lists, appointments scheduled, and goals set. But, if you don't get enough work done in a unit of time, you won't get paid well. You must learn to plan your work and work your plan, or else.

Communication Sins: If you spend any time on frivolous e-mail, phone calls, faxes, meetings, stops at the coffee shop, golf, tennis, poker - and they are not planned to produce income - you will soon chat, gossip, play and fritter your income, savings and life away.

Yes, I WORK at a coffee shop nearby. They have high speed network lines for my laptop. I also wear my Logo hat, my business name pin on my chest, and have a large name and business card taped to my computer lid, so that it can be easily read from a distance as I work. I also make a couple of phone calls a day to those in related businesses, such as my friend the home designer.

I do a lot of e-mail and anyone who sends me forwarded junk is chastised, every time. Anyone who sends me hoaxes is sent back the hoax reference and I send it to "Reply All" as the sort of people who send that stuff send with everyone's address visible about 99% of the time.

I also get quite a little bit of email, unsolicited, from some of my contacts about things which I'm not interested in. I thank them and let them know what I AM interested in and that I only want that, in a nice way. I get a few hundred SPAM a day. My filters handle all but a few. The rest; I speed read most of it and often find something I can use for my own marketing, not often, so I spend an average of about 2 seconds on each mailing.

I stopped by another home-worker a few months ago and he was playing solitaire, taking calls about jokes and gossip, and was constantly involved in frivolous e-mail. Last week he got a salaried job, at just about minimum wage, he made almost nothing working at home.

Communication sins include incoming and outgoing communications. Television, talk radio, music, telephone, entertaining web sites, porno, dating sites and chat, social calls coming or going, are all time stealers and production killers.

Slovenliness: When you work in a multi-tiered, hyper managed, upper-management, middle-management, worker bee, hierarchy and each level checks and double checks all the levels below and edits everything on the way up the line or out the door - you may find much of that missing when you work at home. You must learn to be your own editor. You must learn to be your own manager. You must learn to be your own Quality Control and Efficiency Expert. If you let slovenly work out your door, off your desk, in the mail or e-mail; you certainly and simultaneously send a bad message about your worth and professionalism. Doing slovenly work will result in slovenly pay.

Home Sweet Home Syndrome: If you are accustomed to turning off the productivity switch when you arrive home, it may be nearly impossible to learn that home is where the job is. If you are used to kicking off your heels, slipping on your robe, lounging in a hot tub with a book and candles, lying on the couch with the paper or any of the myriad activities of a leisure home life; you may not be able to work at home productively. And we get right back to the crux of it all - self-discipline.

Drugs, Alcohol, Tobacco, Sex and Even Music: A glass of wine at home, after work, can be wonderful. A glass of wine while you work at home can be horribly anti-productive. A smoke break at work is at worst embarrassing, at home, you can easily develop a two, three or four pack a day habit and you slide into chain smoking and larger and larger ashtrays. If you are a "recreational" drug user and work at home, you can easily get "hooked on that feeling" and that feeling is not one of accomplishment.

And, oh the wonders of staying in bed with your lover, of afternoon delight and hot nights - but it can soon eat up the day. Many, many folks enjoy relaxing to music, dancing to a tune or otherwise letting good music of their choice take their mind into the sublime. That is not where work gets done. If your mind is on the music, it is not on the job. Concentration is a primary requirement of working at home and without it you will soon be incompetent and unpaid.

Workaholism: Workaholics are often stressed out and need to go home once in a while for a break, or perhaps a break-down. If you are driven to work day and night, as I am, make certain that you love your work so much that you'd do it as recreation. Fortunately I love my work so much that it is not work to me at all. Part of the reason is that I only do the kind of work I love and not any other kind; there are a few things that other Realtors do that I don't do. But, I take the energy that I could use doing those things I don't like and put that much more energy into the other 99% of my profession that I love.

Yes, I'm up before dawn and work often past midnight - today is one of those days - but there is no part of today or many other days that I do anything I don't love. Yes, I was out with a prospective client from 5 pm to 9 pm, came home to 83 e-mails and now I'm pounding out another article and NOT ONE SECOND of that time was I unhappy about what I was doing. I love it all. Darned good thing!!!

If you are a workaholic and don't like what you are doing - you are doomed to ulcers, early death and perhaps a sad family. Don't work at home if you're not qualified. OR, get qualified on someone else's time and then when you've got the drive, determination and discipline - stay home and get more done, more happily.

Advertising on your website is not the only way to earn money online. There are paid survey websites, paid review websites, cashback websites, and other little jobs that can be performed to earn money whilst online. These surveys are e-mailed to users, and they earn cash for every survey that they complete. You might be thinking surely this is some kind of a scam, or something dodgy; not usually would a website give away money for something so insignificant - a few minutes spent answering some simple multiple choice questions. However again, if you refer to the earlier example of Google, these websites are making money out of you and so they can afford to pass a certain amount of this money back to you as an incentive. Paid survey websites sell the information harvested from the surveys to other companies undergoing their own market research.

Paid review websites are similar; they pay people to write product reviews on their website. Whenever the review is read and rated by another member on its site, the author of the review will earn an amount of money. Again, this probably sounds too good to be true - but at the end of the day, the paid to review website is making money from sales made from their site (commission) and from the positive reviews of other brands on their site.

Cashback websites pay its users a certain rate of cash for purchasing goods online via their website. They are making a profit from your activities though, as when you make a purchase of an item directly from their website they will be earning commission. Say they earn 20 pounds when you join an online betting site and make a 20 pound bet. The cashback website would probably pass around 15 pounds of this commission back to you, and thus making themselves a 5 pounds profit from the transaction.

Again there are other ways to earn money online, such as mystery shopping websites, paid forum posting, and from using eBay to sell products. Inevitably though, somewhere down the line someone is making money from your activities, but as you are making money from doing them as well then you can' really complain - everybody is happy.

Is Working From Home All It's Cracked Up To Be?

I’ve worked from home for the last 27 years so I guess I am entitled to make some observations about how it works.

There are some critical issues that you would need to consider –

before deciding to do this yourself.

1. Discipline. Working from home means working – not staying. And the temptations for walking away from the work can be compelling. Kids come home with great news so that’s a good reason. A movie on TV I want to see – well that’s pretty compelling. How about when I’m not in the mood. You know – the words aren’t flowing, the mind feels like porridge, there’s no-one to see me.

It’s easy to simply find an excuse and justify it with a catch-up clause. I’ll work later when everyone has gone to bed. I’ll get up early. Yeah.

I work from home because I like the flexibility. I can take a break to listen to my kids – they are both away at university now – but I watched them grow up – and I got the chance to grow up with them. I can goof off if I feel like it – but you have to face the facts that the work has to get done. If you take time out for some other activity – you have to put it back. I smile when I read about all the guys who work in their pajamas at home – seemingly for the odd moment in between drinking coffee and goofing off. About how easy it all is.

Garbage. If they are successful I’m pretty sure the reason why they are in their pajamas is because they haven’t slept for 3 days and don’t have time to change. I know there have been days when I’ve got to writing at 3am and been so busy that I’m still there as suppertime – dressed for bed. It’s just been too busy to change.

2. Flexibility. Working from home allows enormous flexibility – often the cause of so many home business failures. I like to work a lot. If I worked in an office away from home I’d be frustrated. See – working from home allows me to go to my office when ever I want. I can watch my wife in the kitchen, listen to the TV in the den, stroll through to grab a cup of coffee and watch my wife painting – (you can see her stuff at [http://www.veebauer.com]).

I can get up at night and go to work if something is buzzing in my brain. I can go to work at 3am and no one minds because I’m home when everyone else gets up. I can work late if I want and that’s ok. But you will notice the word WORK a lot in my story. It’s vital to make the flexibility work for you and help you increase your output – not tempt you away from the work to be done.

3. Organization. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried to take over the rest of the home as office space. It usually starts on the dining room table – I may need to spread out some work so I can organize it. Then some goes through to the TV room because I’m going to proof read or catch up reading or sketch an outline while the commercials play on the screen.

Then I leave all that behind when I go back to my office to do something there. It’s very easy to get buried when you work from home. So you either have to have a spouse who will shove you back in your hole occasionally – with all your stuff, or you end up lost. You have to stay organized – ( My wife wants to know how come I can’t follow my own advice …hmm)

4. Focus. You have to keep the faith. In spite of the distractions it is essential to keep the focus on output. You must be able to measure what you have done and how much closer to the end result you are. Sometimes it’s easy to get confused between effort and results. We are taught to work hard and we will be rewarded. Perhaps one of the biggest lies told. Results come from the right work being done properly – not from effort.

Don’t get me wrong. Effort is necessary – but it doesn’t stand alone. That means that busy work is to be avoided at all times – and busy work is that stuff that needs to be done but doesn’t move us towards the end result. It’s often a convenient distraction from doing important stuff because it’s easy, risk free and routine and maybe makes us feel good. Do that when the real work is finished. When the end result is closer than it was.

5. Loneliness. Working from home can easily create a feeling of being isolated. Guys go to work – talk about the game, customers, the boss, the secretary, the news and so one. Don’t let them fool you that’s its all work. There is a feeling of community in a public work environment. You don’t have that at home. You are usually alone. Working. Alone. Worrying. Alone. You must be prepared for dealing with that.

And there are solutions. Maybe alone is ok for you. I think it’s great. I can get on with stuff and no-one is poking his head into my office wanting to gab about something. But then my wife and kids think I’m a bit strange anyway and it’s safer for the public if I don’t go out. You can also maintain contact with others through the phone or visits if you feel the need to share. That’s what the telephone is for –

Conclusion

Working form home is a life style – not really a work style. I don’t commute in rush hour traffic, don’t ever get home late for supper, see a lot of my family. I don’t have to pay office and parking rentals and I get to be my own boss – and I’d never change it.

There are four main ways to make working from home possible:

This is an easy way to work from home while maintaining the security of a stable career. You must realize, though, that working from home may limit you in terms of advancing in your company. 2. Telecommute as an independent contractor - There are many companies that hire independent contractors to do work such as data entry, transcription and customer service from home. 3. Own a direct sales/MLM home-based business - Many times these types of home-based businesses are overlooked, but they truly can bring an income and allow you to work from home. However, doing your research before joining a company is very important. Look for representatives of the company to speak with and, if possible, try to find someone who has been a representative for the company, but is no longer. They may be able to share some of the negative aspects of the business with you.

Also check with the Better Business Bureau and make sure that the company that you are considering has a good reputation.
